Start with purpose
Every great motion design piece begins with a clear purpose. Before animating anything, define why you’re doing it and who it’s for.
What action or understanding do you want to inspire? A focused goal (raising awareness, explaining a service, or motivating a donation) will guide every creative decision.
Identify your goal: Is the video meant to inform (e.g., teaching a concept), persuade (e.g., marketing a product), or entertain?
Know your audience: Tailor tone and style to the viewers’ interests and level of knowledge. A video for schoolchildren will look different than one for industry experts.
Simplify the message: Boil the idea down to one central theme or question. Avoid adding irrelevant details. Every scene and motion should serve the main purpose.
Keep script and storyboard aligned with this purpose. If a piece of animation doesn’t advance the core message or feels “nice but unnecessary,” cut it. Remember: motion should serve the content, not the other way around . By starting with purpose, your motion design will be clearer and more impactful. Ensuring viewers walk away understanding exactly what you intend.
